It takes immense courage to be our own best friends, but it’s part of finding inner peace and living life to the fullest. In our culture, we’re taught that it’s okay to say things like “I love chocolate,” “I love rainbows,” or “I love hiking,” but if you say “I love myself,” there’s often an uncomfortable silence. We’re taught that loving ourselves is selfish and egotistical.”

Denise Linn, The Soul Loves the Truth: Lessons Learned on my Path to Joy.

I recently reread Denise Linn’s (my Soul Coach and Interior Alignment™ Teacher) book, The Soul Loves the Truth. It is a terrific book: It is intimate and healing, one of those books where you can pick it up anywhere and find help and wisdom within its pages. It is also really good for helping you solve problems, especially if you take time to do the exercises.

For example, this time of year, as we move into Autumn, I oftten begin having an inner debate about turning the heating on. It is one of those inner dialogues we have with ourselves that do not make a lot of sense and I really didn’t understand why it was an issue for me. I read Chapter 4, Your Thoughts Affect your Abundance, and in doing the exercise, I acknowledged that the reason I didn’t want to turn my heat on is because of the higher electricity bill I would get. Of course this is quite a common concern we all have and in my mind I decided I would hold off as long as possible.

It sounds reasonable but doesn’t take into consideration that some years are warm long into the fall, and other years it turns cold and rainy earlier. When I did the exercises for Chapter 4, I saw clearly how I was being counter productive. When I am cold I do not feel like working, and working less has an impact on my finances.

I did the suggested guided visualization exercise, imagining my home comfortably warm. I am content and very productive and with all the extra work I am doing I have more than enough money to pay the electricity bill. It is a good investment in myself.

Then I read Chapter 5 Cherishing Yourself, and thought about what my decision said for my self worth. After all I wouldn’t let a visitor in my house feel cold. Isn’t it strange how we ‘put up’ with situations and feelings, like we do not matter? Shouldn’t our own needs take precedence … like putting on our own oxygen mask before helping a child with theirs?

In the Law of Attraction, what we think about we attract to ourselves, so if we would like others to treat us well, we must learn to cherish ourselves so that we send out that vibration. This book helps you to tune into your subconconsious thought patterns so that you can become more deliberate about the ‘vibes’ you send out. I love this book and highly recommend it!

I am sitting at my living room window watching a spectacular lunar eclipse. How fortunate that it is a clear night, and that I am at home with a front row seat. As I watch, I wonder why people are so fascinated by events like these. Apart from being rare, what is the significance?

I believe it is because so much of the time we perceive ‘the sameness’ of our lives. Events that happen rarely — once every few years, or once in a lifetime — capture our imagination on the uniqueness of time.

Truthfully, life is different every second. For the most part it is imperceptable – but irrevocable change. And most of the time we miss it. Events such as an eclipse wake us up to change, a state where we consciously witness the passing of time.

Part of what I love about soul coaching is how it teaches me about change. It helps me be more in the moment, more aware of what is happening around me. My goal is always to slow down and pay attention! Tonight I can experience that. The moon is just a sliver of white now. They say it (the moon) might turn red at the peak of the eclipse. I wonder if it will tonight.

I witnessed that once, many years ago…

A few days ago I was asked to do a talk on the [tag]law of attraction[/tag] for a local networking group. I was excited and quickly said yes and we began planning a date. But soon after, as the buzz wore off, I began to feel heavy about it and my mind began searching for reasons it wasn’t going to work. Finally I checked in to see what was going on inside, because my initial enthusiasm about giving the talk was authentic.

The truth was the timing just wasn’t right. Yes, I could make it happen, but to do so would create an imbalance between things already in the works, already committed to. With several big events coming up that required a lot of preparation, this talk wasn’t a good allocation of energy at this time. Once I heard the message ‘energy allocation’ I was able to withdraw from the talk with good conscience and the heavy feeling disappeared.

Energy allocation is about considering your investment of time and energy and finding a balance. Have you ever asked yourself what your time is worth? Not paying attention to your energy allocation can be quite expensive. Some behaviour, like procrastination, is costly and also frequently self sabotaging. On the other end of the spectrum, working harder and longer can also have a high cost: your results may be less than you expect due to fatigue, lack of concentration or spreading yourself too thin. As well, the cost on your personal life can be high if you frequently put work before relationships to meet your obligations.

I’ve read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,by Stephen R. Covey which explains energy allocation but for me the theory wasn’t enough to shift my behaviour. I learned how to manage this success strategy through [tag]soul coaching[/tag]; I learned that my most important energy allocations are long term investments: things such as writing every day, exercising, and spending time with people I love. These are things that feed my soul and give me energy: they are my treasures.

My experience with soul coaching has demonstrated that doing these exercises will help you get clear about what your treasures are and how you allocate your energy.
