There are different kinds of clutter: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Often these overlap – one type of clutter can cause another type of clutter. Physical clutter can be having too many possessions to fit into the space you have available, but even if you have more space than possessions, especially if you do not use them regularly. Physical clutter can be clothes that no longer fit or are no longer in style, an out of control paper trail, the junk drawer items which threatens to take over the entire cabinet, gifts you received which were unsuitable and unused, things you are storing (such as family heirlooms)…and the list goes on. If it takes up space, it is (potentially) physical clutter.

Mental clutter is the stuff you carry around in your head. It can be found in judgmental thoughts such as a mental to-do list – the things you should do. It can be self-criticizing scripts that run through your head — the gremlin that sits on your shoulder saying “I told you so.” It can also be decisions you have been putting off, jobs that are waiting to be done,

Emotional clutter often comes from holding on to the past. It is in regrets, holding on to past hurts and grievances, anything that holds you back such as fears, people or situations that have not been released. Emotional clutter can also be unfulfilled dreams.

Spiritual clutter is when you do not honour and nurture yourself and can manifest as not really being present in your life. You might find yourself filling your life with mindless activities that do not bring you joy, holding on to belief systems that no longer serve you, or being in environments that are not supportive,

All of these types of clutter overlap. When you release clutter in one area of your life, it often has affect somewhere else. And when you make changes in your inner life – belief systems for example, it is valuable to physically change your environment.

The closets in your home can represent all types of clutter because closets are collecting points for all kinds of things. Depending of the kind of closet, it could be items used daily, once a year — or never. Clutter in closets is often a metaphor for the parts of your life you keep hidden away — things that are private, hidden away, or secret. Items pushed to the back of closets can represent things you don’t want to deal with.

Today choose one closet,or even one one shelf of a closet and sort through it. Take everything out and sort through what is stored in there.

Notice any thoughts, emotions, or memories arise while you sort and clear. If these items had a message for your soul, what would it be? What meaning do these items have for you? Clean and clear the area thoroughly and put back only things you use and love. Have some boxes and bags handy for the items that you will not keep or that need to be stored elsewhere in your home.

Here is an exercise to help you to get clear on what you really want to [tag]manifest[/tag] in your life. You might have worked with ‘top 10′ lists in the past. In the exercise, instead of your top 10 things you want, make a list of at least 100 things you would like to manifest. Get a notebook and write down the numbers 1 – 100, leaving a space next to each number to write down the thing you want to manifest.

Why 100? Because often the first 10 or 20 of the things we want — or what we think we want – are driven by our ego-minds. They may not be what our soul truly needs. When you make a list of 100 things you would like to manifest, the ego-mind fades into the background as it begins to run out of things it desires. Then the [tag]higher self[/tag] begins to emerge and the deeper soul desires are revealed. Many people find they begin to cast their net of desires wider, wanting things for other people, even people they don’t know. It is an interesting thing that begins to happen.

Now I am not saying there is anything wrong with wanting things for yourself. I will be needing a new vehicle next year and there is a certain car that keeps appearing to me. I would like something fuel efficient — probably a Hybrid. But here is the thing: Without taking time to really get clear on my soul desires I could manifest that car — but still feel unfulfilled, or I could try to manifest that car without being successful — and be dissatisfied.

When I do the “100 things” exercise I see that there are some potential conflicts. I have desires stronger than owning a new car. For example I have a desire to walk near the ocean front every day, but the only way to conveniently get there is to drive – and I don’t like to drive everyday. I want to walk most places I need to go, so living outside of the city near the ocean isn’t what I want either. Finding a place to live in the city within walking distance of the ocean and services is in [tag]alignment[/tag] with what my soul really desires.

Putting my energy into manifesting that goal would bring inner simplicity to my life, since even with a fuel efficient car I’d still have to drive to get to the ocean. So I would probably not get to the ocean every day. There would also be inner simplicity in being free of expensive car payments and a long term commitment.

These are the types of decisions you might find yourself weighing when you get down to manifesting. When you are really clear about what you want, going about attracting it is much easier. On the other hand, if you find your ability to manifest isn’t working very well, it is probably because there is an inner conflict that you haven’t identified or addressed. Try the “100 things” exercise to learn more about what you really desire.

Did you watch the movie, or read the book, The Secret? Have you applied the [tag]law of attraction[/tag] to your life? Have you used feng shui to help you with [tag]manifesting[/tag] what you desire? How did it work out? What were your experiences?

What I have found in my life and in observing my students and clients, is that the law of attraction is not as straight forward as it seems because people (me included) don’t always know what they want, especially deep inside at the soul level. How can the law of attraction possibly work if we aren’t clear about what we want to manifest?

Not only do we need to know what we truly want, but this clarity must exist on all levels of our psyche. If there is some place where it doesn’t ring true — a place inside yourself that does not feel deserving — it won’t happen: This is where your ability to manifest gets stuck.

We all have these inner ‘birth control’ devices. They are the layers of our history that tell us we are not deserving, are unworthy or lacking in some way. But all it is, is programming. It is how you have become conditioned to think about yourself throughout your life. It isn’t real, but on the other hand this programming has a powerful ability to shape your self beliefs and what you can manifest.

I believe the first step in manifesting is to reset your programming by realising the layers of programming are not who you are: Who you are is infinite, magnificent and Divine! The next step is finding a way that works for you to remove layers — the birth control device — to get in [tag]alignment[/tag] and find your inspiration.
