Have you ever been in the situation where something you really wanted didn’t happen? Perhaps you said to yourself, “it was just not meant to be.” The reasons why we don’t get what we want are not always easy to pin down but some possible explanations are:

At some level we feel undeserving

Our self-doubt sabotages us

Lack of support: Other people tell us it is out of our reach

The goal or dream is not in alignment with our higher self

Let’s look at this last one: The goal or dream is not in alignment with our higher self. What does this mean? Your [tag]higher self[/tag] is your ‘best self’: YOU experiencing yourself as healthy and whole, believing in yourself fully, in alignment with your Source Energy.

Many people experience their higher self in a relationship with a higher power, the Source Energy that goes by many names, some of which are Creator, universal consciousness, Great Spirit, God, Allah, Buddha, Jesus, Krishna, Goddess, Great Spirit, Angels.

We receive guidance from Source Energy, through insight and intuition, meaningful dreams, signs and symbols that repeat, and synchronicity (when the right person shows up in your life and precisely the right time and place).

Listening to these guided messages is efficient. This is the cosmic birth control device. If you are about to go down the wrong path — that is any track that takes you further away from your experiencing your higher self — Source Energy may slow things down, places obstacles in the way, or puts the ‘brakes’ on, so that you do not expend energy needlessly. The birth of [tag]goals and dreams[/tag] that are not in alignment with your higher self is controlled; they simply do not grow.

So how do you know if you are experiencing the effects of the Cosmic Birth Control Device, or whether you are self-sabotaging? Isn’t it enough to make you throw your hands in the air whenever something doesn’t go right and say, “well it’s the Cosmic Birth Control Device, so there is no use trying!’ An easy out and ally for self-sabotaging strategies.

I confess I do not know the answer, but what I do know is that if you check in with your body and your emotions, the answer will be there. How do you feel when you think of that goal? Inspired, excited, motivated? Or ambivalent, anxious, defensive? Tune into your body, find the stillness inside and listen for the answers. The guidance is there, if you listen.

Clutter-clearing is modern-day alchemy. It is one of the fastest ways to completely transform your life. Denise Linn, Feng Shui for the Soul

There are different kinds of [tag]clutter[/tag]: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. Often these overlap – one type of clutter can cause another type of clutter.

Physical clutter is complex: it can be simply having too much to fit into your space, but that is not necessarily clutter. It is in the eye of the beholder, but if you do not use or love those possessions it is clutter. Some prime examples are clothes: ‘mistake’ purchases worn only once or never at all, things that don’t fit you at your current size, trendier items that are not currently in vogue or collections that got out of control.

Physical clutter also shows up as paper — magazines and newspapers, and sometimes books.

Junk drawer or places where you put all the stuff you don’t know what to do with but can’t bring yourself to throw out.

Things you are storing for others (could be the family heirlooms for example.)

Mental clutter is the stuff you carry around in your head:

judging thoughts like: “I told you so” or “you’ll never achieve that goal” or “who do you think you are?”

endless to-do lists you are trying to remember

nagging thoughts like: I should exercise more often. I shouldn’t watch so much TV

decisions you have been putting off, jobs that are waiting to be done

Emotional clutter is a little different from mental clutter though it can cause mental clutter. Emotional clutter is when we do not release emotions after the event is finished; it is holding on to the past. Some examples are:

carrying regret, blame, and grievances from the past

being fixated on fears so that it holds you back

unfulfilled dreams

people or situations that have not been released

memories of how things used to be

Spiritual clutter is when you do not honour and nurture yourself and can manifest as not really being present in your life. You might find yourself filling your life with mindless activities that do not bring you joy, holding on to belief systems that no longer serve you, or being in environments that are not supportive.

All of these types of clutter overlap to a certain extent though it is often not apparent until you begin the clearing, or the unravelling process. When you release clutter in one area of your life, it often has affect somewhere else. And when you make changes in your inner life – belief systems for example, it is valuable to physically change your environment.

Through coaching you can learn how to release these patterns so that you can step into your [tag]higher self[/tag] living fully in the present.

Here is an exercise to help you to get clear on what you really want to [tag]manifest[/tag] in your life. You might have worked with ‘top 10′ lists in the past. In the exercise, instead of your top 10 things you want, make a list of at least 100 things you would like to manifest. Get a notebook and write down the numbers 1 – 100, leaving a space next to each number to write down the thing you want to manifest.

Why 100? Because often the first 10 or 20 of the things we want — or what we think we want – are driven by our ego-minds. They may not be what our soul truly needs. When you make a list of 100 things you would like to manifest, the ego-mind fades into the background as it begins to run out of things it desires. Then the [tag]higher self[/tag] begins to emerge and the deeper soul desires are revealed. Many people find they begin to cast their net of desires wider, wanting things for other people, even people they don’t know. It is an interesting thing that begins to happen.

Now I am not saying there is anything wrong with wanting things for yourself. I will be needing a new vehicle next year and there is a certain car that keeps appearing to me. I would like something fuel efficient — probably a Hybrid. But here is the thing: Without taking time to really get clear on my soul desires I could manifest that car — but still feel unfulfilled, or I could try to manifest that car without being successful — and be dissatisfied.

When I do the “100 things” exercise I see that there are some potential conflicts. I have desires stronger than owning a new car. For example I have a desire to walk near the ocean front every day, but the only way to conveniently get there is to drive – and I don’t like to drive everyday. I want to walk most places I need to go, so living outside of the city near the ocean isn’t what I want either. Finding a place to live in the city within walking distance of the ocean and services is in [tag]alignment[/tag] with what my soul really desires.

Putting my energy into manifesting that goal would bring inner simplicity to my life, since even with a fuel efficient car I’d still have to drive to get to the ocean. So I would probably not get to the ocean every day. There would also be inner simplicity in being free of expensive car payments and a long term commitment.

These are the types of decisions you might find yourself weighing when you get down to manifesting. When you are really clear about what you want, going about attracting it is much easier. On the other hand, if you find your ability to manifest isn’t working very well, it is probably because there is an inner conflict that you haven’t identified or addressed. Try the “100 things” exercise to learn more about what you really desire.

Do you ever find it difficult to stick to a decision you’ve made to change your habits? If so, you are not alone. It can be quite difficult, and it often seems the moment you’ve made the decision, temptation, which may have been previously behaving itself quite nicely, suddenly springs to life.

To give you an example: I am considering dropping all dairy products from my diet and have decided to have a ‘vegan month’ — one month of NO dairy. I am not a heavy dairy user so I thought this would not be difficult — until the trip to the supermarket. The sights and smells of fresh strawberries and blueberries brought back a vivid memory of my grandmother’s delicious Strawberry Shortcake dripping in fresh whipped cream.

My mouth began watering just at the thought, and then my energy begin to sag and my resolve to weaken. It wasn’t until I stood before the dairy case that I remembered my no-dairy decision. I took a deep breath and internally asked for guidance. Suddenly I remembered a tip I heard: use coconut milk instead of cream. Problem solved and all was well again. At home I savoured the fresh berries with coconut cream. And actually it was better with more complex and sophisticated flavours!

Keeping your word to yourself is one of the key ways you can be authentic because it is demonstrating trust in your[tag]higher self[/tag]. You are allowing yourself to be guided by your soul. It is not about deprivation, but awareness and so there is no need for force, just love, compassion, acceptance — and a sense of humour always helps.

Are there methods you use to make your decision stick and keep your word with yourself? For example do you ask for help from your guides, journal about it, post sticky notes around the house, or ask others for help? What works for you?

What in your life brings out your best self? What causes you feel [tag]inspiration[/tag], do your best, be noble and gracious and live in [tag]alignment/[tag] with your deepest beliefs? How do you feel when you are in your ’best self’ mode?

For me it is a sense of deep inner peace and simple pleasures. It can be very powerful to make a list of what makes your heart sing.

Here is my list of what inspires me to be my best self.

1. Spending time with people who inspire me
2. Reading my favourite authors
3. Being in a beautiful place in nature
4. Singing, especially with a choir
5. Listening to music I love
6. My house (when it is tidy and clean)
7. Gardening, tending to plants
8. Cooking (when I am not in a rush)
9. Playing with my pets
10. Watching babies and young children
11. Walking on the beach
12. Watching the sunset
13. Spotting whales in the ocean
14. A picnic shared with loved ones

I encourage you to write your own list and post it in a place where you can see it frequently and do the things on your list as often as possible. We can get so busy in our lives that we actually forget to do what really brings us joy and lifts us up, but making time to do them will help you be your [tag]higher self[/tag].
