Have you ever visited a different city or town and loved it so much you decided to go back again to recapture that memory — only to be disappointed? More often than not return visits are disappointing because each time is a totally different experience.

Every place has its own vibration – the energy and ‘feel’ of a place. Even different neighbourhoods in the same city have a unique vibration (so staying at a different hotel or resort in the same city can give your trip a totally different feel.) It is also true that the vibration of a city changes over time so that when you visit it again, the change is obvious, even though the people who live there may not have noticed. The same is happening in your own neighbourhood, town or city…visitors will notice changes more than you will. Most change is so gradual we do not notice. This does not apply to sudden changes, of course, such as trees that have been felled, or the damage following a fire or a violent storm.

In addition your personal energy field or vibration is also changing continuously so you can never really recapture a time, location or a feeling, even if everything seems on the surface to be the way you remember it.

You might also have had the experience of planning and waiting for a trip, all the while building it up and imagining every detail, so that the reality once you get there cannot compete with the image you have created. (My personal experience is that this is what can happen when you plan to experience something the second time. The second Cruise I eagerly anticipated did not live up to the first one I took, when all was fresh and new.) All of this puts an interesting spin on how we experience our holidays and vacations. Most of us go through life believing that we will have another chance to go back and do something ‘right’. Eckhart Tolle writes in A New Earth:

“People believe themselves to be dependent on what happens for their happiness, that is to say, dependent on form. They don’t realize that what happens is the most unstable thing in the universe. It changes constantly. They look upon the present moment as either marred by something that has happened and shouldn’t have or as deficient because of something that has not happened but should have.”

If you are upset on arriving at your dream destination because it isn’t as you remembered it last time, or something has happened to ‘ruin’ things: perhaps your luggage is delayed or the accommodation is not what you expected, try to avoid the temptation to compare, or to tell yourself that you will have a perfect trip next time. I am not saying that we have to pretend all is well even when it is not, but instead to acknowledge and then let it go. The perfection is in how fully we are able to attend to the energy of the moment. Allow yourself to experience unique energy of the time and and place, which by nature can never be re-created in the same way again. Each moment in time and space is precious, because of its unique constantly changing energy vibration.

Just try feeling good about yourself and see what happens.

I’m serious. Tell yourself how wonderful, brilliant, successful and talented you are. You might be familiar with writing affirmations. So, write an affirmation, making it as bold and ‘out-there’ as you can, and write it down. Fill a whole sheet a paper with your affirmation. For example, “I, Deborah Redfern am a famous writer and a sought-out key note speaker and feng shui teacher.”

What happens is that when you tap into your self worth a little voice in your mind speaks up and says “oh you are not!,” or “who are you kidding, you could never do that” or “who do you think you are?”

Spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle would call this the pain-body, the Ego, delighting in making itself feel important by creating drama. These inner objections bring your energy down and even make you feel inauthentic with yourself.

I call these inner objections blurts. They can be very damaging to your self worth because they keep you from completely experiencing your self-worth, unique qualities and gifts.

In order to release yourself from your negative core beliefs you work with them. Do not try to stop them, but allow them to rise to the surface. Each time they do, write them down. (A lot will come to the surface while you fill your page with your affirmation).

Now you want to look at this list of blurts and see if you can discover where they came from. Whose voice do you hear it in? Is there a memory attached to it? Many times our blurts will come out in a parent’s voice, an older brother or sister, or a teacher’s voice.

With each blurt that comes up, thank it and tell it that it is no longer needed. You can let them go. You can also rewrite each of your blurts as a positive affirmation.

For example, a blurt might be:

“There are thousands of talented writers out there. What makes you think you are so special?”

And I could re-write this blurt as “There is no one else in the world like me and people want to receive the gifts I have been given to share.”

Sometimes just knowing that we all have these blurts, or negative core beliefs takes away a lot of their power. I invite you to use the comment box to share some of your blurts — if you dare!

That first night she was sharing her concern that she couldn’t have a book as spiritually deep as A New Earth as her book club selection. Wait a minute, she said. I’m Oprah. I can do anything I want. Well of course she can. She certainly has the resources to make that possible.

I found myself thinking about what she said and it struck me as having a deep inner truth. In a sense we are all Oprah’s. In our universe we are the ones deciding what happens. Well, much of it anyway. Think of all the decisions — some small and others large – you make everyday.

The question is, are you making these decisions consciously or are you getting caught up in ‘shoulds’ that lead you to go down a path that doesn’t support you? It is very easy to get caught up in our own self-created dramas.

For example this afternoon I was putting together an outline for an upcoming course but noticed there was little enthusiasm around it. It was almost like checking something off my to-do list. In trying to figure out what was off balance, I realised it was the delivery method that was off, not the content.

A light bulb suddenly went on: change the delivery method. Oprah’s message came out of the blue: ”I’m Deborah, I can do anything I want!” With this realization all the excitement, enthusiasm and the desire to serve — the life force — flowed back into my project. Coaching is what I really want to do, not teach a course.

So the question is, how did it grow into something I wasn’t truly interested in? An interesting question to be sure, but often it isn’t until we experience what we do not want that we create the room for what we really want to flow into our lives. We then must give ourselves permission to go in this new direction.

So thank you Oprah for the message. I truly heard it.
